The corporations themselves don't really play terribly differently from any other empire, the caravans are a distraction at best, and the new megastructures are late enough in the game that they are basically irrelevant - by the time you can build them, you've already pretty much either won the game or got bored with it. The former two add a lot of extra events that really help flesh out the exploration part of the game, while the latter adds a very different style of playing compared to the traditional organic life. However, before either of those, I would absolutely get Distant Stars, Leviathans, and Synthetic Dawn. So, based on that, I would go with Apocalypse over MegaCorp. Apocalypse at least introduces the Marauders, though, and the Great Khan event is a nice addition. In all honesty, MegaCorp was kinda disappointing.
